SVRC Spring 2024 Scholarships Set New Record

In another record-setting year at UGA, the Student Veterans Resource Center eclipsed $350,000 in scholarships and grants during the Fall 2023 and Spring 2024 semesters.

On April 30, the Student Veterans Resource Center (SVRC) hosted its largest and most impactful Scholarship and Honor Cord Ceremony to date at the Tate Student Center Grand Hall. This record-setting event celebrated the awarding of over 150 scholarships totaling more than $188,000—marking the highest amount awarded in a single semester in the SVRC’s history.

In another milestone, the Center recognized 108 student veterans eligible to graduate in AY 2024, setting a new high for the number of student graduates. Since 2014, the SVRC has supported over 1,200 UGA graduates who have served, or are currently serving, in the uniformed services. The traditional red, white and blue military Honor Cords were presented during the April 30 SVRC ceremony by President Jere Morehead. The cords recognize the unique contributions and perspectives student veterans bring to the UGA community.

Barrett Malone, Associate Dean of Student Affairs, commented on the achievements, “The strength of our donor base and the high caliber of students who have served is remarkable. The commitment from the entire UGA family to support our veterans is truly inspiring.”

The SVRC now serves more than 350 military students and has experienced a 65 percent increase in self-identified veteran students over the past three years. A special thanks to Annie Carlson-Welch, Assistant to the VP of Student Affairs and Amber Atkinson in the Office of Institutional Research for their assistance in managing and tracking veteran data.

With the cost of living on the rise, the 142 scholarship applications received from student veterans Spring 2024 also broke an all-time record for the Center. The number of students with families, first generation, and those without military benefits continues to increase at UGA driving up demand for additional funding to earn a degree.

“Thanks to the incredible support from our individual, family, and corporate donors, as well as the UGA Parents Leadership Council and the UGA Foundation, we are able to provide significant assistance to our student veterans,” said SVRC Director Jon Segars. “Together, we help our students manage the transition from the military to higher education and then back to the military or into the global workforce. It is wonderful to assist those who have sacrificed so much for our Nation.”
