Georgia Military Veterans Hall of Fame Members Named as 2024 SVRC Distinguished Fellows

Ginny Dornheggen and Bill Huff were recognized by the Student Veterans Resource Center for their personal and professional contributions to UGA military students.

Since 2016, the Student Veterans Resource Center (SVRC) at the University of Georgia has recognized individuals who demonstrate a profound influence on the decisions made in support of student veterans. The 30 members of this elite cadre, the SVRC Distinguished Fellows, have given of themselves far beyond what is asked of them personally and professionally.

Virginia (Ginny) Dornheggen and William (Bill) Huff were honored during the Fall 2024 Veterans Scholarship Ceremony for their countless contributions to veterans both at UGA and beyond. Both 2024 SVRC Distinguished Fellows have also been inducted into the Georgia Military Veterans Hall of Fame (GMVHOF) and join fewer than 200 other members including Medal of Honor recipients, Prisoners of War, several political leaders and UGA’s own Coach Vince Dooley.

Virginia ‘Ginny’ Dornheggen commissioned as an officer through the Army Nurse Program and served with the 67th Evacuation Hospital in Vietnam where she earned the Bronze Star for her service. Ginny continued her service after leaving the military as a career nurse in intensive care, open heart recovery, home-health care, urology and as a certified wound care Registered Nurse.

Dornheggen is a supporter of the physical and mental care of our wounded soldiers at Fort Eisenhower and as a speaker advocating for the support of our service members returning from combat and their medical, mental, and emotional needs. Today, she represents the Reynolds Veterans Association of Lake Oconee as its liaison for student veteran scholarships here at the university and since 2014, has presented 37 awards during our semi-annual ceremonies.

William ‘Bill’ Huff served as a U.S. Marine and received his commission through the Marine Corps Platoon Leader Course while at the University of Georgia where he earned his degree in 1965. From 1966 to 1967, Bill served with the 3rd Marine Division in Vietnam where he earned the Navy Commendation Medal with combat valor device.

In his continued service following his military career, Bill served as the inaugural chairman of the 1775 Society for the National Infantry Museum Foundation and is the Chairman Emeritus of that society today. He is an ex-officio member of the Board of Directors of the National Infantry Museum and serves as a board member of the National Infantry Association. Bill and his wife Maudie have a student veteran scholarship UGA and have provided support since 2017.
